The new EPA approved inserts are not only kinder to the environment, they offer a bonus: since the secondary burn that cleans up the emissions also creates a great deal of free heat, EPA approved inserts will heat the same area as their non-approved predecessors while burning much less wood. This translates into heating efficiencies that are nearly double the industry standard of just a few years ago.

Note: Wood fireplace insert efficiency ratings don't tell the whole story.

While it is true that, given two fireplace inserts of the same approximate size, the more efficient of the two will heat the same area while burning less wood, the efficiency spread among the top-rated inserts we sell is very slight.

For example, the 4.5 point difference in efficiency between the Hearthstone Clydesdale insert at 79% and the Hearthstone Homestead hearth stove at 83.5% might seem significant, BUT at the end of a 3-cord burning season, the difference in fuelwood consumption would be less than $20!
